Lubricants play an integral role in the running of different machines across various sectors, including automotive, manufacturing, marine, mining, textile, medical, cosmetics, and many others. Lubricants generally consist of 90% base oils and 10% additives, which impart desirable characteristics.
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has categorized the different types of base oils into five groups:
Group I base oils are solvent-refined, dewaxed mineral base oils that are widely used in industrial, grease, gear, and marine lubricants.

Group II base oils are hydrotreated mineral base oils that are primarily used in modern engine oils and transmission fluids.

Group III base oils are hydrocracked base oils that are used in premium-quality engine oils, transmission fluids, and industrial lubricants.

Group IV base oils are polyalphaolefins (PAO), which are fully synthetic base oils suitable for use in automotive or industrial lubricant formulations working in extreme cold or heat conditions.

Group V base oils comprise all base oils not included in the first four groups. These are mostly naphthenic base oils, synthetic esters, polyalkylene glycols (PAG), and others. Group V base oils are typically used as a supplement to other base oils to improve their properties. Naphthenic base oils are frequently used in transformer oils and metalworking fluids.
